Buckinghamshire is steeped in hunting history and the Buckingham Hunt traditionally used the Town Square in Winslow as their meeting place. Winslow is a market town in the north of Buckinghamshire and even to this day the Hunt meets on Boxing Day. In the latter part of the 19th century the Buckingham Hunt diversified by holding a steeplechase meeting on Thursday 31st March 1887. The course was on the Bourton Estate, comprised of grass, ridge, furrow and natural fences, and the opening Farmers’ Plate was won by Blazes ridden by W. Pullen. The Hunt Cup went to Templeman ridden by Mr C W Walker, while the Hunters Steeplechase was won by Rostrum. Although the meeting was obviously successful, no further meetings were recorded. |
